The Basilica of the Madonna of Tirano originated from an event that profoundly marked the history of the city and the territory. According to tradition, in 1504 the Virgin Mary appeared to Mario Omodei, <\/strong>promising an end to the plague that was afflicting Valtellina.

As a sign of gratitude, the Basilica was built in Lombard Renaissance style<\/strong>, completed in its essential parts in 1513, consecrated in 1528, and elevated to a minor Roman Basilica in 1927 by Pope Pius XI. Built on the garden of the Apparition<\/strong>, donated by the knight Luigi Quadrio,<\/strong> it was created by highly skilled craftsmen such as the Rodari brothers <\/strong>and Alessandro della Scala.<\/strong>

Around the Basilica, the district of Madonna di Tirano developed, soon becoming a pilgrimage center and an identity symbol for the entire valley.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The Basilica of the Madonna of Tirano, with its three naves in a Latin cross layout<\/strong>, is one of the most significant examples of local Renaissance architecture<\/strong>, enhanced by the surrounding square that emphasizes its proportions, and enriched over the centuries by valuable decorative interventions. The harmonious structure<\/strong> and sober facade<\/strong> complement the richly decorated interiors<\/strong>. <\/p>

The spiritual heart of the complex is the Scurolo<\/strong>, beneath the Altar of the Apparition, a place of intense devotion. Testifying to its value is the venerated polychrome wooden statue of the Madonna of Tirano<\/strong>, proclaimed in 1946 as the \u201cHeavenly Patroness of Valtellina\u201d<\/strong>. <\/p>

The facade<\/strong> marked by pilasters, oculi, and the rich sculpted portal, the bell tower<\/strong> with Romanesque features, the 16th-century dome<\/strong>, and the monumental 17th-century baroque wooden organ<\/strong> express the dialogue between divine grace, art, and human measure<\/strong>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
