The City of the Red Train
From Tirano begins one of the most fascinating railway journeys in the Alps. The Bernina Red Train connects Italy and Switzerland crossing the Bernina Pass with a panoramic line – in its distinctive red color that climbs in altitude following the mountain’s profile. From the windows unfold glaciers, alpine lakes and peaks over 2,000 meters. An experience that begins in the city and climbs, curve after curve, toward ever-changing panoramas.

Tirano, city of the Red Train
Tirano is both the starting point and the arrival point of the Bernina Railway, one of the great alpine railway works.
Built between 1906 and 1910, the line connects Valtellina and Engadine overcoming an elevation difference of over 1,800 meters along 61 km, from 426 m above sea level in Tirano to 2,253 at Ospizio Bernina.
Designed with narrow gauge, it tackles steep gradients without rack railway, integrating harmoniously into the mountain landscape.
In 1979 the twinning with Hakone – Tozan Railway took place, a historic Japanese mountain railway.
Since 2008 it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for its technical value and the quality of its relationship with the alpine environment.

Tips for making the most of the experience
Choose between two experiences: the Bernina Express, a direct and faster tourist train, with panoramic carriages with fixed windows and mandatory reservation; or the Regional Red Train, more flexible (stops everywhere, free boarding and alighting), with opening windows perfect for photos, slightly longer travel times and lower fares.
Allow yourself the right amount of time, considering stops along the line.
Each season offers different scenery, from green summer meadows to autumn foliage, from winter light to crisp spring air.
Layered clothing is recommended: the train crosses significant elevation changes and temperatures vary rapidly.
